The Mural of Period Five

Fossil Ridge High School English teacher Mr. Hanauer had his Pre AP sophomore World Lit classes each construct a mural as a whole class final project. Each period chose a claim and call to action to convey through art created by each student in the class that as a whole creates a cohesive picture conveying their message.

The claim this class chose was, ”Education is the key to fixing injustices in both developed and undeveloped worlds because the empowerment of education can guide others to take action. It should be our obligation to educate both ourselves and others to fix the issues happening around the globe.”

This was conveyed through a tree with a bright, lively side, and a dark and dreary side. “ We chose to make one side darker to convey Kabul and Afghanistan as a whole after the Taliban came in, and after all the destruction of the Afghan culture and human rights,” said art coordinator Makayla Lotito.

Their call to action was, “Through awareness and thought-provoking visuals of our mural, we will encourage people to be more mindful of the situations going on around the world, and that they should consider helping out to solve these injustices by aiding in the rebuilding of Afghanistan and other areas torn down by conflict.”
